"The writer is that person who, embarking upon her task, does not know what to do."

~ Donald Barthelme

This website is a reflection of my work as a writer, in all its aspects. I write. I teach writing. I support writers. All to the best of my limited ability. Of the tabs on this website: WORDS are my own unedited timed writes or haikus, the wild-ish words of others (you’re invited to submit), and recommendations for further reading, inspiration or inquiry. TRY THIS is a collection of writing prompts you can do in 10 minutes or less. EVENTS speaks for itself. Scroll down here to read some testimonials from workshop participants. That’s about it!

Good Words from Writers

  • “Cynthia has a very special ability...

… to create safety and a space where you can land instantly. She brings tenderness, vibrancy and a Zen calm...and makes us all feel accepted and included.”

  • “Such a rich and wonderful experience

…full of hidden surprises…It produced work that was livelier and more powerful than anything I’ve ever written.”

  • "This writing workshop was a booster rocket...

… to unleash our creativity...This was serious work with a light heart."

  • "Much to my surprise...

…I found myself 'turned on' by writing, through Cynthia's prompts, her encouragement, the writing support of my sisters here and the presence and wisdom of Catherine, our Zen techer."

  • "The first time I read my words out loud...

…I could feel my hands shaking, holding my journal, which really felt like holding all the tenderness of my being...The space you created, sweet Cynthia, held me, and the women in it too. So the shaking settled and softened, and words felt safe to share."

  • "Find your heart. Find your voice...

…Find total acceptance of what comes out of your pen at Cynthia's workshops and retreats. Her huge spirit and open heart allowed me to find my way home to my self expressions and enjoy the journey in all its quirkiness, discomfort, zaniness and pure joyful delight."

  • "Everything is okay in this class of classes...

…. The learning comes easy, and words flow, unbidden. Come, to know yourself and others. Writers write; and that is what we do."

  • "This was an intense and rewarding experience...

… It was more therapeutic than I expected. It's different from any writing group or class I've done due to the request / practice of reading everything we wrote. The prompts were excellent and Cynthia was a great facilitator."

  • "Without knowing it...

…you are writing and thinking in different ways. Over the course of a week in a breathtaking place of spiritual beauty, you will find a new resource to draw from in your writing pursuits.”

  • "Leave your preconceptions at the door...

…The way is paved with surprises. When you believe what ‘they’ say, you limit the myriad of constellations waiting to be born. Listen, listen, listen. The silence sings with hidden truths.”

  • "I am feeling like a famous writer...

…which feels pretty amazing, I won’t lie. I have so much to write and say, and being guided thoughtfully through the prompts felt adventurous, totally thrilling, naughty and whole.”

  • "Simple yet profound...

…straightforward yet deep, and there’s a lot of fun and laughter each day. If you’re looking for an experience that help get you writing, with a supportive group of women, this is it…”

  • "Exactly what I needed...

…right now. Cynthia is gifted. She created an atmosphere/container that is safe, fun, playful. I have been streetched — writing in ways I hadn’t before. I never even attempted fiction until this retreat. I love to write, and I have loved how this retreat re-sparked that love in me.”

  • "Writing with Cynthia is good for the soul...

…She opens a circle that ends up being generous and generative, everyone sinking into their writing as if the words have just been waiting for us to unleash…Your first time won’t be your last.”

  • "A deep dive...

…into both writing and self-exploration. It ran the gamut of topics and emotions and was incredibly powerful. Not only to write my own stories but also to hear the words of others. We laughed, we cried, we bonded with and supported each other. Cynthia was a kind and creative leader who encouraged us to “go for it…”

  • "I found so many words...

…burbling inside of me, drawn out with the incredible variety of creative prompts. I now have to go back to the real world, trying to capture this glorious, worn out, riled-up feeling in my heart!”

  • "You've helped...

…this fragile, strong, fallible being find her voice. What a precous gift."

  • “I was walking over with a bad case of nasty rats...

… stampeding around my brain, and all my usual self-help resources seemed defunct. Once I started writing, though, the rats went away and have stayed away. There are some small personal miracles happening regularly in that room, thanks to you.”
