William Faulkner hits on it with this quote: “The only environment the artist needs is whatever peace, whatever solitude, and whatever pleasure he can get at not too high a cost.”
I have found that by waking before or at dawn — and before anyone else in the house is up — I have the peace and solitude I need to write. And there’s the pleasure of the page and a cup of tea. The only cost is going to bed a little earlier and praying myself out of my warm nest when the alarm sounds.
I never was a morning person, until I started writing in earnest. Now I love it.
If you’re struggling to find time for your art, my advice is to claim the early morning. It’s worth every bit of the cost.
